Philosophy and Goals
The Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy has a multifaceted program which addresses the individual learning needs of children in grades Pre-K through five. It is our goal to create a secure environment in which students can grow both academically and emotionally. We strive to provide both enrichment and support depending on the needs of each individual student. JKHA recognizes the special qualities of all students and provides a platform for all of them to shine.
Learning Center
The Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy Learning Center is a multi-faceted support and enhancement program which addresses the individual learning needs of identified children in grades kindergarten through five. Its goal is to create a secure environment in which students can grow both academically and emotionally. The Learning Center philosophy is to equip students with effective strategies and provide them with the resources needed to develop and maintain a realistic level of success in the mainstream classroom.
The Learning Center is a partnership between special education teachers, classroom teachers, students and parents. Learning Center staff members serve as resources and work in conjunction with classroom teachers to adjust curricular demands and modify assignments and tests in order to minimize frustrations and maximize success. Learning Center teachers foster a positive, nurturing atmosphere in which a variety of multi-modality techniques are employed.
Students are taught individually and in small groups, enabling each child to work at his/her specific level and pace. Students are empowered by understanding their own unique learning style in order to gain insight into their personal strengths. Given consistent encouragement and proper tools, students in the Learning Center are taught to advocate for themselves and develop the confidence and skills necessary to become independent, successful learners.
Counseling Services
The Lower School Counseling Service provides social skills groups, relevant classroom presentations, classroom observation, crisis intervention, and consultation with staff, students, and parents. We also offer an extensive referral network, helping parents find community resources in helping their children with social, emotional, and behavioral concerns. We provide a kindergarten screening service, assessing every incoming kindergarten student and providing parents with written results.
Life Skills Curriculum
Using New Jersey curriculum standards as a guideline, we endeavor to help children make healthy choices in all areas of living, including nutrition, body awareness, hygiene, safety, substance abuse prevention, and overall wellness.
One of our key goals is to facilitate smooth communication between parents, students, teachers, and administration. We believe that a happy, well-adjusted child is a child available for learning, and we strive toward that goal. We are here to help you!
