Sefer Bamidbar – we are able to cover  Perakim 1-20

Topics:  Trials and tribulation of Bnei Israel in the Midbar

Skills:

  1. reading skills, Analayzing Pesukim and Mefarshim , recognizing problems
  2. Advancing independent learning

 

Gemara

 

 

Middle School Gemara is a skills-based curriculum that focuses on vocabulary development, recognizing the different Talmudic debate structures and comprehending Jewish law.  To master these skills, students will be encouraged to persevere in their study of Gemara.  Students will learn to utilize varied resources to assist in vocabulary development as English translations of basic texts are discouraged in the classroom.

Sixth grade students will continue their study of Mishna from 5th grade and will be introduced to the skills necessary for Gemara study using the Revadim method developed by Rabbi Pinchas Heyman of Bonayich Educational Research.

  1. Revadim method teaches students to identify the different personalities and layers of Talmudic discourse through linguistic and historical cues.
  2. Program will help students organize and structure the information learned from the Gemara.
  3. Students will progress to Gemara study, learning the fourth chapter, תפילת השחר, Tefilat Hashachar, of the tractate Berachot

 

Ivrit

 

 

 

Study of Ivrit is done through the Neta Program. We will cove the following topics:

  1. Alpha Neta
    1. Feminine and masculine nouns and verbs with regular and irregular endings
    2. There is/isn't-are/aren't
    3. Prepositions
    4. Questions words binyanim paal, hif’el, piel and hitpael
    5. Present, past and future tenses  (specific suffix’)
    6. Prepositions
    7. This/that/those
    8. Different forms of adjectives
    9. Feminine/masculine numbers
    10. Time related words
    11. Using the words: want to, love to, need to, can and the infinitive form
  2. Neta 1-4
    1. All of the above at a more advanced level
    2. Possessive
    3. Chronology and sequence of events
    4. The use of therefore in sentence structure
    5. Nouns and adjectives
    6. Milat hayachas –Et
    7. Yesh/ain
  3. Neta 5-8
    1. All of the above at a more advanced level

  1. Students learn about the rise of Shmuel the Judge and the beginning of the Monarchy of Israel
    1. Students advance skill development in reading text and commentaries
    2. Lessons focus on critical thinking skills in classroom discussions surrounding events of the Navi
    3. Students learn about “Middot” and “Hashkafa” by learning about the Judges and Kings of Israel

  1. dealing with the laws surrounding the reading of the Torah and our practices in the synagogue
    1. Develop reading skills and learn to ask critical questions
    2. Identifying the different sections in the Gemara: Questions, Answers, Proofs, Problems, and Solutions.
    3. Distinguishing between the different parts of the Gemara page: When to use Rashi, Tosfot, Torah Or and Ein Mishpat Ner Mitzva.
    4. Recognizing the major components of the Gemara: Mishna, Braita, Tosefta, Memra etc.
    5. Utilizing Key Words to clarify proper punctuation of the Gemara as well as the thought process involved.

2008-2009 -Students will study the tenth chapter, ערבי פסחים, Arbei Pesachim, of   מסכת פסחים, tractate Pesachim

  1. dealing with the laws surrounding the Seder and the Passover holiday in general
    1. Develop reading skills and learn to ask critical questions
    2. Identifying the different sections in the Gemara: Questions, Answers, Proofs, Problems, and Solutions.
    3. Distinguishing between the different parts of the Gemara page: When to use Rashi, Tosfot, Torah Or and Ein Mishpat Ner Mitzva.
    4. Recognizing the major components of the Gemara: Mishna, Braita, Tosefta, Memra etc.

  6. the wrongs of king Solomon
  7. the split of the kingdom

Sefer Shmuel Bet:  

  1. death of King Saul and anointing of King David
  2. the capture of Jerusalem and making it the capital of the kingdom
  3. the story of Batsheva
  4. the consequences of King David’s choices
  5. the revolt of Avshalom

Methods and Objectives:

  1. extensive use of commentary to illuminate the text
  2. recognition of key Hebrew foundational words and phrases
  3. appreciation for the resolve of King David throughout a lifetime of tribulation
